A Gatwick Station that is Fit for the Future
We are concerned about the Rail Regulators’ response to the scheme that has been developed in close partnership between Network Rail, BAA Gatwick and other key stakeholders.
The Office of Rail Regulation had suggested an investment of only £9m which is a fraction of the £30m proposed by Network Rail and supported by the local partners. This is now £20m, but is still short of the sum needed.
The proposed redevelopment meets the Regulators’ stated aims of improving train performance, delivering improved reliability, capacity and frequency of service. The improvement programme would also assist capacity by addressing bottlenecks that occur at Gatwick, Haywards Heath, East Croydon, Redhill and Wandsworth.
The rail infrastructure, station and platform improvements are vital to ensure that public transport plays a key part in developing the economy of not just the Gatwick Diamond, but the South East.
Finally, Gatwick will be the second international gateway to London 2012 and it is inconceivable to think that there could be any question over the funding required to develop the Station.
